“Ghost-Writers” For Home
Internet Business

The Quest For A Good “Ghost-Writer”

Finding a writer for your online business can be a
daunting task. If you’ve done your search right,
you’ve probably had more writers respond to you than
people who try out for American Idol (OK, probably
not, but you’ve probably got 5-10). Now, how do you
decide which ones will be appropriate for your online
business?

Writer's Knowledge

If you have a website for your online business, you
need to make sure that the writer has a good knowledge
of search engine optimization (SEO). SEO writing is
inserting keywords into the documents that allow
search engines to find them. If your documents aren’t
written using SEO, then your online business will be
lost in the vast labyrinth of information that exists
on the Internet. Hire a writer who understands search
engine optimization and your online business will have
a better chance of being found.

Writing Samples = Personality

Once you’ve dropped the writers who don’t know how to
use SEO, start to look at the writing samples that
they’ve sent you. This part should be almost entirely
subjective, and based on the kind of impression about
your online business you want to leave readers with.
If there are enough grammar mistakes to make it
objective, well, I think you know where to put their
file. What you’re looking for is a voice that you are
comfortable with. This person will actually be the one
communicating with the clients of your online
business, so you have to make sure that their voice
will be a good front-man (or woman). You’re probably
going to want someone warm, friendly and a bit funny.
Find someone who will charm your clients and convince
them to buy something from your online business.

Writer's Ability and Experience

Another consideration is the writer’s ability to write
in many different genres and in several different
voices. He is the writer, but you are still in charge
of how the written pieces come out. If you can find a
writer for your online business who can be directed to
write in a specific voice and consistently produces
results, you’ve found a gold mine.

Writer's Resume and Ratings

The resume is the least important part of a writer’s
application when they are being hired to do short,
freelance projects, which is probably what they’ll be
doing for your online business. It’s a good way to
break ties between people whose writing samples you
liked equally, though. When you’re looking at a
resume, you want to see a person who’s done a lot of
writing, obviously. Here again, you want to make sure
that this writing is not just in the area that you
need work done in; people who can write in a number of
genres are more likely to be able to adapt to the
specific needs of your online business. Also, make
sure to call the references and previous employers.
People may look good on paper, but actually working
with them can be another story.

Ultimately, Your Voice Online

The writer that you choose will be the voice of your
company. You don’t want someone who writes like a
Dilbert character representing your online business.
Also, you don’t want someone you can’t work with
writing for you, so it’s usually a good idea to have a
phone interview.. The writer you choose for your
online business has to be the best you can afford.
Nothing less than the best will be good enough.

Focus Is The Key To Online Business

The Internet is a vast sea of online business
opportunities, and if you get lost on that expansive
ocean, then you’re going to be adrift in the middle
without a motor and will eventually drown. In online
business, as well as any other business, really, focus
is your motor. If you know who and what you’re
targeting, you’ll be able to head straight for it,
without getting distracted by the other ‘ports’ that
won’t buy what you’ve got onboard. Here are a few
things that you should really focus on in your online
business so you won’t be set adrift.

FOCUS YOUR ONLINE BUSINESS ON A TARGET
AUDIENCE

Before you can start marketing your online business,
you really need to know who is going to utilize your
business. If you’re selling something, make sure you
know who will want to buy it. If you’re operating a
blog, make sure you know who is going to read it. Once
you know your online business’s target audience, you
can begin to market to them. When you’re marketing,
make sure that you are marketing to your target
audience. Everyone isn’t going to want your product.
That’s an unfortunate truth that many business owners
refuse to acknowledge, and they eventually sink. If
you know who does want your product, then you won’t
waste time or money marketing to the people who don’t.
Focusing on a specific, targeted audience can be the
difference between success and failure in an online
business.

FOCUS ON CONTENT COHESION IN YOUR ONLINE
BUSINESS

Make sure that your online business does not stray
away from itself. For example, if you have a site that
sells nature photography, don’t start selling heavy
metal CDs at random. If you feel that heavy metal
complements your nature photography well, great. By
all means, sell them together. But you have to change
both your online business and your marketing strategy
so that the nature photography and heavy metal are
cohesive and sell together naturally. You have to
show, or make clear somehow, the link between the two
so that your target audience understands. Likewise, if
you’re running a more information based online
business, like a blog, make sure that your content
stays cohesive. If your blog is about fiction writing,
then keep it about fiction writing; if it is about
music, keep it about music. Again, you can introduce
other topics to the blog that you feel complement
fiction writing or music, but make sure that the links
between subjects are clear. A confused consumer is a
hesitant consumer, and hesitation is the first step
towards not buying something.

FOCUS ON SPECIFIC GOALS FOR YOUR ONLINE
BUSINESS

An online business is often the result of a big dream
for the future. Without these big dreams, an online
business is like a novel without any themes. It may be
neat to read, but it has no meaning. Without dreams
and big ideas, your online business will fail. But
failure is also certain if you get so caught up in
that dream that you forget about the day-to-day work
that goes with any business. Make specific goals that
you want to reach in your online business every day,
every week, every month, and focus on meeting those,
not on achieving your overall dream. Goals can be met.
Focusing on goals gives your online business overall
focus. The time to consider your dream is when you’re
making goals. Absolutely make sure that each goal will
lead to the fulfillment of your dream, but focus on
the completion of your goals.
